I also tried with the old HD which I also cloned from my other mac and that one works with the SATA-cable. I have an Asus Z87-A board for which I have flashed the modified bios in order to boot off of m2 ssds. I used macrium reflect to clone my current boot ssd (128gb Samsung 860) to a 1 tb wd.
